It is fitting that a platform of the order of VHMUN 7 should be the basis to discuss, debate and deliberate on such a crucial issue as ‘Climate Change’. The unparalleled evolution of VHMUN in successfully providing the opportunity to learn, improve, and accomplish goals in a friendly, collaborative environment with self esteem and fairness has reached elysian plains and has hence dared us to take up arms against the juggernaut – Climate Change!
The current change in Earth’s climate is of particular import as most of it is human induced and taking place at a rate that is unmatched in the past 1,300 years. Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters in the last century. The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa. Global temperature is to rise by an incredulous average according to the latest estimates. Some scientists argue a ‘global disaster’ is already unfolding at the poles of the planet; others are concerned about Earth passing one or more ‘tipping points’ –perhaps irreversible.
Climate change is a truly global, complex problem with economic, social, political and moral ramifications; the solution will require both a globally coordinated response and local efforts on the city and regional level. Should we just be epitomes of lethargy and watch our Earth walk the ‘primrose way to everlasting bonfire’?
In VHMUN 7 we will simulate the workings of UN bodies and nurture global citizens with the hope to strengthen resolutions related to Climate Change and consequently reinforce worldwide peace in the near future, so that all of us can enjoy prosperous and rewarding lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with Nature.
Men at times are masters of their Fate. It is time we own it up and inch towards fulfilling it. Join VHMUN 7 and enjoy the pleasures of the journey!
